Casa Pentimento - Quito , Ecuador
Casa Pentimento
Project by: Jose Maria Sáez & David Barragán
The project is generated by the repetition of one prefabricated concrete piece. The "piece" can be installed in 4 positions, through which the architects solved the structure, closure, furniture and vertical circulation for the house.

CASE : Puerto Madero Waterfront
In 2007 Harvard's Graduate School of Design dedicated the 6th volume of the CASE series to the Puerto Madero Waterfront in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This is the product description from Amazon.com - "The neighborhood of Puerto Madero, in Buenos Aires, is a prime example of waterfront urban renewal. This book by the Harvard Graduate School of Design traces the progress of the project of Puerto Madero, which until the late 1980s lay idle. It discusses the strategies and implications of the effort, offers a detailed analysis of the landscape, and focuses on the forces of globalization, which have helped drive this and other urban renewal projects around the world. Puerto Madero emerges as a prime case study of current trends in urban revitalization, with all its inherent benefits and drawbacks."

Sao Paulo - Global Cities @ Tate Modern
Sao Paulo was one of cities chosen for Global Cities exhibition last summer at the Tate Modern in London. Featured in the exhibition was the film São Paulo - Citytellers by Italian artist Francesco Jodice. Francesco spent time as an artist-in-residence in Sao Paulo, where he collaborated with local artists, architects, anthropologists and filmmakers to produce this extraordinary city portrait.
Casa y Estudio en Vila Romana / MMBB Arquitetos
Casa y Estudio en Vila Romana. This single family house /work space in Sao Paulo was this week's profiled project at plataforma arqutiectura. Sao Paulo based architects, MMBB Arquitetos (No type-o here, in Portuguese you drop the c) , also responsible for the nicest dentist's office you will ever see (clinica de odontologia on their website), were given the task to incorporate these two programs within a sloping site. The workspace is partially carved out of the slope following the existing topography and site perimeter, while the exposed concrete "domestic" volume floats above it, supported on only four points.

Plataforma Arquitectura
This might as well be the holy grail of Latin American contemporary architecture. Plataforma Arquitectura and its sister site Plataforma Urbana, which focuses more on urban issues, could be the South American equivalent of archinect and it is no surprise that both sites are based in Santiago, Chile. The site's collaborators have profiled many projects, in and outside Latin America. The quantity and quality of the images the include with the projects is well above average. The site's text is in Spanish, so it is a good opportunity to start honing your skills and get more into arquitectura than architecture. I will be posting specific building profiles as the semester progresses.

Assadi + Pulido
Felipe Assadi and Fransisca Pulido - www.felipeassadi.com - are one of those young firms that are producing amazing contemporary architecture in Chile. Architecture Record featured them as part of the Design Vanguard in 2006.
I had the opportunity to see them lecture in San Juan last year when they came down as jurors for the local AIA awards. I found it interesting that they showed almost the same amount of slides showing their work as the did the diverse and contrasting landscapes of Chile. Assadi noted that when photographers would go to take pictures of the house they would always stand further and further away until the house was almost not visible. They would explain to him that the landscape was more important than the house.
Their Schmitz House was one of the sets used in the movie La Mujer de mi Hermano (My Brother's Wife). The film is mostly set in Santiago, Chile and its worth watching just to get a great tour of the house.
